چکیده

Language comprehension is a complex task that involves constructing an incremental interpretation of a rapid sequence of incoming words before they fade from immediate memory, and yet the task is typically carried out effi ciently and with little conscious effort. Given the complexity associated with extracting intended meaning from an incoming linguistic signal, it is perhaps not surprising that multiple cognitive and perceptual systems are simultaneously engaged during the process. One ramifi cation of the multifarious nature of online language comprehension is that individuals tend to vary greatly in terms of their processing skill. Indeed, considerable by-subject variability in performance on syntactic processing tasks has been observed in numerous studies over the past two decades (e.g., King and Just, 1991 ; MacDonald, Just, and Carpenter, 1992 ; Novick, Trueswell, and Thompson-Schill, 2005 ; Pearlmutter and MacDonald, 1995 ; Swets et al., 2007 ), and yet debate still exists in regard to both the sources and the nature of this documented variability. This chapter explores some potential sources of variability in online comprehension skill. First, we briefl y discuss the proposed role that verbal working memory plays during syntactic processing, followed by the exploration of an alternative hypothesis that reassesses the effects of verbal working memory in terms of individual differences in learning-based, experiential factors. Subsequently, we consider the degree to which variability in “cognitive control” has the potential to account for variability in syntactic processing tasks, and then we touch on, briefl y, the infl uence of variability of perceptual systems on processes related to language comprehension. The literature on individual differences in syntactic processing is vast, and it is not possible to cover all of it in the small number of pages allotted to this chapter. Instead, we hope that the information contained here will help guide those with burgeoning interests in the area of individual differences research toward some of the current topics and debates within the fi eld. Individual Differences in the Processing of Complex Sentences

To investigate the relationship of functions that underlie the processing of complex sentences, we conducted a self-pacedreading experiment on single and multiple center embedded subjectand object-extracted relative clauses, accompanied by three tests to measure individual differences. Our data suggest that inhibition and executive functions are better predictors for individual differences in s...

Exploring Relationships Between Field (In)dependence, Multiple Intelligences, and L2 Reading Performance Among Iranian L2 Learners

L2 learners’ individual differences are crucial factors that deserve attention in L2 education. Focusing on 2 main areas of individual differences (i.e., field (in)dependence and multiple intelligences), this study explored their relationships with L2 reading performance. Participants were 64 TEFL undergraduates and postgraduates. To assess the participats’ degree of field (in)dependence and mu...

Sentence Processing Among Native vs. Nonnative Speakers: Implications for Critical Period Hypothesis

The present study intended to investigate the processing behavior of 2 groups of L2 learners of English (high and mid in proficiency) and a group of English native speakers on English active and passive reduced relative clauses. Three sets of tasks, an offline task, and 2 online tasks were conducted. Results revealed that the high-proficiency group’s performance was the same as that of the nati...

Sentence Processing in Context: The Impact of Experience on Individual Differences

There exists considerable variation, at the level of the individual, in human sentence processing performance. Here, we aim to illuminate the degree to which experience with language can account for these individual differences. In Experiment 1, we demonstrate that subtle interactions between specific verbs and preceding linguistic context can drive reading times on complex sentences, but only ...

Do Heavy-NP Shift Phenomenon and Constituent Ordering in English Cause Sentence Processing Difficulty for EFL Learners?

Heavy-NP shift occurs when speakers prefer placing lengthy or “heavy” noun phrase direct objects in the clause-final position within a sentence rather than in the post-verbal position. Two experiments were conducted in this study, and their results suggested that having a long noun phrase affected the ordering of constituents (the noun phrase and prepositional phrase) by advanced Iranian EFL le...

Priming Implicit Prosody: Prosodic Boundaries and Individual Differences.

Using the structural priming paradigm, the present study explores predictions made by the implicit prosody hypothesis (IPH) by testing whether an implicit prosodic boundary generated from a silently read sentence influences attachment preference for a novel, subsequently read sentence. Results indicate that such priming does occur, as evidenced by an effect on relative clause attachment. In par...
